Admin/Biographical History This is a piece of commemorative mail carried on Southern Airways first flight from Jackson, Mississippi, to Mobile, Alabama (DC-3 aircraft). Southern inagurated service to Mobile, Alabama, on December 9, 1950, and to New Orleans on January 15, 1951. Southern's earliest service to Jackson began on October 25, 1950.
Scope & Content First flight cover commemorating Southern Airways' inaugural service from Jackson, Mississippi to Mobile, Alabama, on December 3, 1950. Pink cachet reads: "AIR MAIL / ROUTE 98 / FIRST FLIGHT / JACKSON" and has route map showing new service: Jackson-Laurel-Hattiesburg-Mobile and Jackson-Natchez-Baton Rouge-New Orleans. Air mail label has a DC-3 silhouette and text: "AIR MAIL / FIRST FLIGHT A.M. 98 SOUTHERN AIRLINES." Postage stamp features the 1903 Wright Flyer aircraft and brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Envelope is addressed to Earl H. Wellman & Sons.
