Description Laminated Delta-C&S Flying Colonel membership card issued to C.A. Spagnuolo on May 15, 1955. Edges of card have been trimmed, probably to fit in a wallet. Card is printed with text superimposed over a light gray silhouette of a Douglas DC-7: "GREETINGS: know all men by these presents that C.A. Spagnuolo is hereby Commissioned a FLYING COLONEL of Delta-C&S Air Lines in recognition of his outstanding contribution of the development of aviation and for his support of air transportation. This 15 day of May A.D. 1955, whereof witness my signature C.E. Woolman, President."
Provenance Delta's Flying Colonel Program was designed to recognize supporters of Delta and the air transportation industry and considered one of air transport's coveted citations. It was a descendent of the Chicago and Southern Air Lines (C&S) Flying Colonel Program, introduced in 1940, the "brain child" of George E. Bounds, director of public relations and advertising. Delta acquired the program when C&S merged with Delta on May 1, 1953. Delta's Flying Colonel program was discontinued on January 1, 1998.
