Provenance Travel agency sign promoting Pan American's northern route to Europe. On September 13, 1957, Pan American Douglas DC-7C Clippers began flying the Arctic "great circle" or "polar route" direct from San Francisco and Los Angeles to London and Paris. Seattle to London polar service began on September 16.
