Provenance Used by early Chicago and Southern Air Lines (C&S) flight attendants, called "stewardesses" at the time, to distribute chewing gum to passengers on Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Chewing gum relieved ear pressure and queasy stomachs caused by flying in unpressurized aircraft.
