Delta's first Boeing 737-900ER was delivered on September 27, 2013, and entered scheduled service on November 1 (Atlanta—Detroit). Intended for long-haul domestic flights and to replace less fuel-efficient and older technology Boeing 757 and 767 and Airbus A320 aircraft.
In 2015, Delta began installing split-scimitar winglets, instead of the earlier blended winglets, on its 737-900ERs to improve overall fuel efficiency.
