Title Southern Airways Stewardess Uniform Hat
Date 1951-1965
Collection Southern Airways Uniforms: Flight Attendants
Object Name Cap
Catalog Number 2009.83.4
Description Navy blue overseas cap. Decorative stitched seams overall. Two white ribbons on the left side of cap.
Provenance This hat was worn by Southern Airways Stewardess Wilma Estes. This hat was part of Southern's longest-running flight attendant uniform style - from 1951 until 1965, consisting of a navy blue jacket, skirt and cap. Lightweight fabrics suited the mild winters and hot summers of the southeastern United States.

The uniform was worn year-round until 1959; then in winters only. The original white or cream blouse was a button-down, v-neck style with a collar, worn until 1954, when it was replaced with an overblouse with standing collar and back zipper. Short, white gloves completed the look.
